Welcome to the 'Diagnostic Assistance' website!

Automotive Diagnostic Assistance is a CD-Rom Ebook (electronic book) publication from Auto-Solve to help employees within the motor industry with the principals of engine management and the associated 'under bonnet' technology. Ideally designed for all mechanics including: apprentices; fitters; technicians in workshops or performing mobile / roadside diagnostics. The ebook is also an excellent training aid and many copies have previously been sold to colleges and training establishments.
The Institute of the Motor Industry have approved the Ebook for IMI Awards Light Vehicle Level 3 and City & Guilds for Level 3 Light Vehicle qualification (4101-06(NVQ), 4101-28 (SVQ), or 4101-51 (VRQ)).
The Ebook will accompany most diagnostic products, especially an oscilloscope or serial port code / live data scan tool.

Version 6.3 was released on the 4th October 2010 with 33 new topics, 14 updated topics and celebrates ten years of continuous improvements.

News: July 2011, further to customer feedback we have released a new customer interface for the serial number registration, this creates a user account and allows easier management of the two passcodes. The new  once registered customers can use the login link in the menu bar above. Login details are also emailed to the customer. We have also added the passcode required to unlock the eBook in blue text on the home page of the eBook to make it clearer, although this still needs to be entered using the yellow key icon in the menu bar.

Message from the author

I have been involved with automotive diagnostics, training and diagnostic equipment since ‘coming off the spanners' many years ago, working with several of the trade's leading diagnostic equipment manufacturers including Crypton, Allen Test and Peerless Automotive. I have been involved with training and development for Crypton, Pico Technology, Green Flag and Computa Tune.
Since 2000 I have been working with Auto-Solve developing the Ebook presentation.
In today's workplace there is no substitute for using the right diagnostic equipment and having access to technical information. The personal development of the technicians employed to repair modern vehicles has never before been so important.
Using a logical approach to problem solving can save time and money; never overlook the obvious. I hope we have explained the systems operations in a simple and logical format, however it is impossible to cover every single system.
I hope you find the reference material and diagnostic techniques helpful in your own diagnostic workplace, and don't forget that feedback is always welcome via email or the questionnaire.

Sun Diagnostics, a subsidiary of Snap-on Incorporated, specializes in vehicle diagnostic tools for both domestic and foreign vehicles. An automotive diagnostic tool communicates with your vehicle's onboard diagnostic computer system (OBD) and outputs information on diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and overall vehicle health. While these products are expensive, they can save you money in the long run. As of 2011, Sun Diagnostics offered four different types of hand-held diagnostic tools.

  1. CAN-1B

    • The CAN-1B kit European adapter works with your Sun Diagnostics scan too. It allows you to communicate with the controller area network (CAN) protocol, the European OnBoard Diagnostics system (EOBD) and OBD-II. This tool comes with the Personality Keys, which allows you to communicate with both current and future European vehicles.

    Ethos

    • Ethos scanners are available in different languages, including English, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. This scanner has a small, monochromatic display screen on which you can view statistical and graphical data about your vehicle. It communicates with both American and Asian vehicles, including vehicles made since 1986. It has a USB port, which allows you to plug it into your computer and download the data stored on the device. It also has a CompactFlash memory expansion slot for storing and backing up data.

    Solus

    • The Solus series includes the Solus (standard) and Solus Pro models. Solus (standard) scanners are available in different languages, including Spanish, Italian and Danish. Solus Pro is the top-of-the-line model in this series and it has a 6.2-inch color screen. It also has a thumb-pad control that makes it easier to navigate. The Solus Pro allows you to capture freeze-frame data, which provides you with information on how well your vehicle is operating at a certain period in time. You will receive a one-year warranty on this model.

    Modis

    • The Modis series are the most high-end diagnostic tools offered by Sun Diagnostics. They can capture up to 6 million vehicle samples per second. They have up to four channels. Modis takes snapshots of vehicle performance and features a Fast-Track Troubleshooter software program that helps you figure out what's wrong with both domestic and Asian vehicles. This program can also help you diagnose problems with your anti-lock brake system. Modis works on vehicles made after 1978.
